Two Washington County sheriff’s deputies were suspended after being caught last week on U.S. Forest Service property drinking and apparently unclothed, according to accounts released Tuesday. Officer Chris Adkins, 30, and Officer Scarlett Dennison, 42, were issued misdemeanor citations by a Forest Service officer Tuesday morning at the sheriff’s office. Both are charged with possessing alcohol in a prohibited area, public nudity and public intoxication.
Adkins faces an additional charge of child endangerment. Sheriff Ed Graybeal said he did not know the origin of the child endangerment charge. The incident occurred on Friday on federal land in Carter County. The Erwin office of the Forest Service manages the Cherokee National Forest, which is partly in Carter County. Graybeal said the deputies were off duty at the time of the incident.
Both officers are assigned to the patrol division and work on the same shift, Graybeal said. They were both hired at different times in 2002. Adkins and Dennison were suspended from duty with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation and federal court proceedings. Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Smith said she didn’t have the paperwork in hand and couldn’t comment on the charges at the time. Smith did say that Adkins and Dennison will appear in U.S. District Court in Greeneville Aug. 19, which is the court’s “petty offense violations” day. Graybeal also said he couldn’t comment on the federal investigation.
“With the case ongoing we wouldn’t feel free on saying anything on their charges,” the sheriff said. “They’re both excellent officers,” Graybeal said. He wouldn’t speculate about what might happen if the two are convicted in federal court. “We’ll just have to look and see what comes out of it,” he said.
