
USA TODAY -Amid the excitement of the franchise’s first trip to the NFL championship game, it took the New Orleans Saints a full quarter to settle in at Super Bowl XLIV.
But once Drew Brees and the Saints found their rhythm, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts could only try to keep up.
Brees threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning strike to Jeremy Shockey with 5:42 remaining in the game and the New Orleans Saints beat the Colts 31-17 to claim the team’s first NFL championship at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
After Brees and Shockey connected for the go-ahead score, the Colts quickly drove 44 yards in six plays, getting to the Saints’ 31-yard line and threatening the tie the game.
