A white Westchester cop gunned down an off-duty black officer at point-blank range and then “secreted” the slain cop’s badge to cover up his crime, an explosive new lawsuit charged Monday.
Officer Frank Oliveri took Mount Vernon Officer Christopher Ridley’s badge so that it could be “discovered” later in Ridley’s car – and buttress Oliveri’s claim that Ridley failed to “identify himself as a policeman,” the suit alleges.
The racially charged allegation is part of a $90 million federal civil rights lawsuit charging District Attorney Janet DiFiore and other top Westchester officials with covering up the “execution-style” killing of Ridley.
It identified Oliveri, a former NYPD cop, as the officer who “put his duty weapon to Officer Ridley’s head, and at point blank range shot him once about the left eye intentionally killing him instantly.”
The lawsuit was filed more than a year after a Westchester grand jury cleared Oliveri and the other officers in the Jan. 25, 2008, killing of Ridley.
It charges that DiFiore “determined that to cover it up would better serve her politically.”
“As a result she enlisted the ‘cooperation’ of her co-defendants to hide from Officer Ridley’s father the circumstances under which his son had been executed,” the lawsuit states.
Among other things, the suit states, DiFiore conspired with the county coroner to hide autopsy results “because it would prove the fatal, albeit unnecessary point blank gun shot to Officer Ridley’s forehead.”
Also named as defendants are Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano, Westchester Police Commissioner Thomas Belfiore, Oliveri, and three other Westchester cops – Robin Martin, Jose Calero and Christian Gutierrez.
DiFiore dismissed the lawsuit as “complete and total lies.” She also lambasted the attorney who filed it, Jonathan Lovett.
“To allege, as Mr. Lovett does, that a Westchester County police officer committed a brutal execution in front of three other police officers and dozens of civilian witnesses and that these officers along with the entire criminal justice system then conspired to cover up such acts is outrageous,” DiFiore wrote.
Ridley, 23, was killed as he tried to arrest an assault suspect in downtown White Plains. He was posthumously promoted to detective.
Officials said that witness accounts and surveillance videos showed Ridley did not identify himself as a police officer and did not drop his gun when the county officers ordered him to do so.
He was killed when he turned toward the officers with his gun in his hand, the officials said.
Ridley’s family is alleging that White Plains police deliberately ignored witnesses whose accounts would have supported criminal charges.
